We believe that there are 6 great reasons to eat in season and that’s why our meal plans are based on the vegetables, fruits and fish that are in season each month.
1. It tastes better to eat in season
Fruits and vegetables that are in season and that are perfectly ripe are fresher and just taste better. Produce that is naturally ripened on the vine or tree and harvested at the right time, have much more delicious flavour. I love the sweet taste of tomatoes in summer.
2. Eating in season is good for you
You get a mixture of nutrients from eating different fruit, vegetables and fish throughout the year. Plus, produce purchased in season is higher in nutritional value as some anti-oxidants decline when stored for periods of time.
3. It's good for the planet
Eating in season reduces your carbon footprint. There are less food miles, less storage, less refrigeration which reduces the environmental impact and you’re also helping support local farming.
4. It's more natural to eat in season
Mother nature created seasons for a reason. Winter vegetables are comforting and perfect for hot meals, soups and casseroles, and are high in Vitamin C. Summer provides us with vegetables for tasty salads and sweet fruits for energy.
5. It's cheaper
When fruits and vegetables are locally sourced because it’s in season in your area, the costs go down. Therefore, there is less transport, storage and production costs which makes seasonal food cheaper.
6. It's exciting to rediscover long lost friends
It makes you appreciate the taste of things you haven’t eaten in a while and gives you something to look forward to. I am always excited in October when I see pumpkins in the shops, I enjoy rediscovering the delicate flavour in a pumpkin gratin.
There is so much produce that is available for most of the year, that it can sometimes be hard to know which fruit and veg is in season. So, check out our seasonal food guides to find out more and each month we’ll update the blog with what’s in season.
